The Performing Arts at Kennedy Middle School

We are proud to offer three choir ensembles at Kennedy. Ensembles include Concert Choir (6th/7th grade) and Advanced Choir (8th grade). Students may audition for our A’Capella group, which meets outside the school day.

Meet our Director

TBoormanTyler Boorman is director of Bands and Choirs at Kennedy Middle School. He received his bachelor and masters degrees in music education from the University of Oregon. Recently, Tyler was a featured conductor at Northwest Band Camps at Rockaway Beach, OR. He has acted as guest conductor for several local schools during his time at Kennedy. A self-described “professional student,” Tyler actively seeks out guest artists to come to Kennedy, giving both the students and himself further opportunities to learn from professionals in the field. In addition to teaching, he has performed on trumpet with local groups such as the Eugene Symphonic Band and Swing Shift Jazz Orchestra.

Educational Philosophy

Anyone can participate in our ensembles.
Everyone has something to contribute.
Music enriches the education of our students.
Students experience learning in a unique way through music performance.
Students learn important life skills through music performance.

What to Expect

Students involved in choir at Kennedy are held to a high standard. We work hard for success and have fun while doing so! Students can expect to learn the basic fundamentals for choral performance including breathing, posture and affect. They will also review basic music theory, build upon any background in music theory, and develop listening skills referred to as Aural Skills in the program. Students will leave our program confident in their abilities to perform on stage and ready for the high school program that awaits them. We are working closely with the high school choral program to prepare our students for a successful, life-long journey in music.

Fees

While there are no fees to participate in the program, there will be specific events where students may be asked to pay their own registration fee. In addition, any choral music or text book that is destroyed or returned in poor condition will be charged to the student.
